Adbusters: Calvin Klien   Leave a comment

1. What company does the advertisement represent/subvert?

The company that is being advertised is Calvin Klien.

2. What kind of product(s) is being advertised?

There is no intial product being sold in this advertisement but they are advertising the false use of men’s looks in Calvin Klien’s models. The people who wear the product of Calvin Klien (clothing, underwear, colone) don’t lok like the guys who model it, with abs, a tan, a beautiful smile, good-looking face.

3. What imagery is used in the advertisement to subvert?

The hairy, chubby man is the imagery for this advertisment because it’s showing the “reality” of men who wear the product. It shows that not all mean are perfect and abercrombie model worthy.

4. What message (text, copy) is used in the advertisement?

“Reality for Men” is the message being used in the advertisement because it’s showing that your standards for men shouldn’t be too high and compare your men to the models used in advertisments because every poster ad is airbrushed to be perfect to increase sales.

5. How are the elements and principles of design used to convey a message?

Contrast is used in this ad because in the Calvin Klien posters they are black and white as well, so  probably just copying the company’s style of the posters.

6. Who is the target audience of the advertisement?

The targeted audience would be mostly men because it shows them the truth about themselves and that they don’t need to be perfect. In my opinion it also targets women, only to show them that men don’t look perfect, so they shouldn’t have their standards so high.

7. Does the ad jam convey a clear and successful message?

Yes because there are words and a picture so people can understand with the picture showing that, that is the reality of men.

8. How could the ad jam be improved?

I would not change this ad at all because I think it conveys the message easily and there’s no room or need for change.
